Facial features are the building blocks of portrait drawing, and in this session, students will slow down to study each element on its own. By focusing on individual facial features, we begin to understand how proportion, structure, and subtle shifts in value come together to create believable forms. This class is less about finishing a full portrait and more about learning how each part functions on its own before combining them later.
Working through a series of guided studies, students will break down the eyes, nose, lips, and hands into simple forms, learning how to observe their structure rather than just their outline. We’ll explore how light and shadow define depth, how proportions shift from one feature to another, and how small adjustments in shape can change expression and realism.
Students will practice
• Drawing eyes with attention to form, placement, and light reflection
• Constructing noses using simple shapes and understanding their structure
• Studying lips through proportion, volume, and shadow
• Drawing hands as structured forms rather than complex details
• Applying basic shading to create depth and dimensionality
