In this light, movement-focused class, we’ll explore how to paint birds and butterflies in a way that feels fluid, expressive, and full of life. Rather than focusing on intricate detail, we’ll look at how to capture the gesture and energy of these subjects—how wings move, how forms shift, and how color can suggest motion.
We’ll begin by simplifying these complex forms into loose, approachable shapes, learning how to build a strong sense of structure without over-defining every element. From there, we’ll use watercolor techniques like separated washes and wet-on-wet blending to create soft transitions, natural textures, and organic color variation—especially within wings and surrounding backgrounds.
This class encourages you to lean into the unpredictability of watercolor, allowing the medium to do some of the work for you. You’ll practice letting go of control, trusting each layer, and responding intuitively as the painting develops.
