Sketch Club | Apple Study: Form, Light & Space

  • The Open Art Lab (upstairs at Fine Line Cosmetics & Tattoos) 1036 West Kirkland Avenue, Ste 101 Nashville, TN, 37216 United States (map)

A single apple can teach you an entire foundation of observational drawing. In this session, students focus on how light interacts with a simple form, using value and shadow to understand structure, volume, and dimension in a clear and approachable way.

Working from life, we’ll draw an apple while paying close attention to how light shapes its surface—revealing subtle transitions from highlight to shadow that give the object its sense of roundness. From there, students will expand their observation beyond the subject itself, incorporating the surrounding space, including the table surface and background, to build a stronger sense of depth and placement within the composition. This class encourages patience, close observation, and a slower drawing process that strengthens visual understanding and control. This is the second class in an 8-part Sketch Club series, with new sessions held monthly, each building on the last.

Students will practice:
• Observing how light and shadow define a simple three-dimensional form
• Understanding value shifts from highlight to core shadow on a single object
• Using surrounding space, including the table and background, to create depth and context
