Observing Nature: Painting a Fish

  • The Open Art Lab (upstairs at Fine Line Cosmetics & Tattoos) 1036 West Kirkland Avenue, Ste 101 Nashville, TN, 37216 United States (map)

We’ll take a close look at a real fish and use it as inspiration for a vibrant, expressive painting. By observing its shapes, patterns, and textures, students will learn how to break down what they see into simple, approachable forms.

From there, watercolor comes into play—using bold colors, layered washes, and playful mark-making to bring each fish to life. Scales, fins, and movement will be explored through texture and color, encouraging creativity over perfect realism.

Throughout the process, students will practice key skills like observation, shape simplification, and building texture, all while making their own artistic choices. The focus is on translating what they see into something personal and imaginative.
